Iolitul, cunoscut și sub denumirea de "safir de apă" sau "cordierit," este un mineral alumo-silicat de magneziu și fier, cu o varietate de proprietăți unice și interesante. Culoarea sa variază de la albastru violet la albastru pal, uneori cu nuanțe de gri sau verde. Este transparent până la translucid și are un luciu vitros atrăgător. Pe scara Mohs, iolitul are o duritate de 7-7,5, fiind destul de rezistent la zgârieturi.
Unul dintre cele mai remarcabile trăsături ale iolitului este pleocroismul său pronunțat, ceea ce înseamnă că își schimbă culoarea atunci când este privit din diferite unghiuri. Dintr-un unghi, poate arăta albastru-violet, din alt unghi galben-gri, și aproape incolor dintr-un al treilea unghi.
Iolitul este considerat o piatră a viziunii interioare și a introspecției, ajutând la dezvoltarea clarității mentale și a intuiției.
