Fenomenul care dă naștere acestei forme speciale poartă numele de epitaxie secundară – un proces în care cristalele mici de cuarț se dezvoltă pe fațetele unui cristal mamă, păstrând orientarea cristalină dar formând o textură compactă, granulară și radiantă. Rezultatul este o suprafață bogat texturată, cu o estetică organică și un joc subtil de lumină, în funcție de unghiul din care este privit.
Cuarțul ananas se formează de obicei în condiții hidrotermale, în cavități unde soluțiile bogate în siliciu suferă o răcire lentă, permițând apariția unei astfel de cristalizări complexe.
