Petrified wood, also known as silicified wood or fossilized wood, is a stone born of geological patience and the silent cycles of the earth. They form when the trunks of ancient trees are quickly buried under volcanic sediments or mineral-rich muds, depriving them of oxygen. In this environment, the process of petrification takes place slowly – the organic molecules of the wood are gradually replaced by silica (mainly quartz), but the original texture and structure of the wood fiber is miraculously preserved.

Over time, petrified wood colors develop due to mineral impurities: iron adds reddish or orange hues, manganese brings black and purple tones, and copper can introduce greenish or bluish accents. Although it looks like wood at first glance, this stone is completely mineralized, having a Mohs hardness of about 6.5 – 7, similar to that of quartz.

The most well-known deposits are located in the United States (Arizona, Oregon), Madagascar, Indonesia and Argentina..
