SHUNGITE: properties, significance, benefits, usage

Shungite is a black, amorphous rock with a carbon content ranging between 30% and 98%, but what truly makes it unique in the mineral world is the presence of fullerenes – spherical molecular structures formed from carbon atoms (C60 and C70). These are rare molecules, studied for their antioxidant properties, capable of neutralizing free radicals and interacting with cellular structures at a deep level.

The rock was formed in the geological basin of Lake Onega, in an oxygen-free environment where prehistoric microorganisms might have contributed to the accumulation of organic matter which, under the pressure and heat of geological time, was transformed into shungite. Some geologists claim that shungite contains one of the oldest forms of organic carbon on the planet – possibly even traces of a primitive bacterial life. This hypothesis makes shungite a link between geology and biology, between the mineral Earth and the living Earth.

Its internal structure is irregular, but extraordinarily stable. It has no actual crystals, but the presence of carbon in hybridized forms (sp² and sp³) makes it resistant to degradation and extremely reactive at the electromagnetic level. For this reason, shungite is one of the few stones that can block or reduce the impact of modern electromagnetic radiation.

Shungite is extracted manually from open quarries, using minimally invasive exploitation methods, as the material is often fragile and breaks into irregular plates. There are three classic types:

Its name comes from the village of Shunga, but the connection of people with this stone is much older than the word that designates it. 

In pagan times, the inhabitants of Karelia considered shungite a gift from the northern gods – a living stone, which "breathes" the energy of the earth and offers protection to those who respect its power. It is said that priests of the ancient Finno-Ugric tribes used shungite to create protective circles around forest sanctuaries, and warriors wore it as an amulet against death.

But the true consecration comes in the 18th century, through Peter the Great. Fascinated by the springs in Karelia and influenced by reports of miraculous healings of soldiers, he ordered the investigation of the black rock's composition in the area and established Marsialnye Vody – the first spa resort in Russia. Shungite officially becomes a strategic resource of the Empire, used in water, construction, and purification rituals.

In the late Middle Ages, some Russian manuscripts mention the "stone of the council" – a black rock placed in the corners of wooden churches to protect the sanctuary from fire and storm. Local folklore preserves memories of the "children of shungite" – healers who knew the secrets of the stone and who could see people's auras by touching a fragment of it.

In the 20th century, with the development of technology, shungite re-enters the attention of researchers for its absorbent properties and ability to neutralize electromagnetic fields. 

Russian researchers in the fields of defense and alternative medicine have studied its use in water filters, anti-EMF rooms, and complementary therapies.
