Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, prized for its hues ranging from delicate lilac to deep purple and crimson. The characteristic color is associated with traces of iron present in the crystal structure and with natural irradiation processes occurring during the formation of the mineral.
From a mineralogical point of view, amethyst is made up of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) and crystallizes in the trigonal system. It can form in rock cavities, where crystals gradually grow and create Druze and spectacular geodes.
Crystals can have different degrees of transparency and natural color zoning, along with veils, inclusions and internal fractures formed during growth.
