Azuritul se formează în principal în zonele de oxidare ale depozitelor de cupru. Procesul de formare implică interacțiunea apei subterane bogate în carbonat cu minereurile de cupru, rezultând în cristalizarea azuritului în fracturile și golurile rocilor. Adesea, azuritul este asociat cu malachitul, o altă minerală de cupru, care are o culoare verde intensă. Cele două minerale se formează în condiții similare și, uneori, se găsesc împreună sub formă de pietre de azurit-malachit.
