Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz and one of the best-known minerals in the silicate family. It is valued for its wide palette of shades, from delicate lilac and violet to intense purple, with purplish or slightly reddish tones..

From a mineralogical point of view, amethyst is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) and crystallizes in the trigonal system. The characteristic purple color is related to traces of iron present in the crystal structure and natural irradiation processes that occur in the geological environment where the crystal forms.

Amethyst can form in cavities of volcanic rockswhere silica-rich solutions allow crystals to develop on the inner walls. Over time, these can create spectacular amethyst geodes and druzes., composed of numerous crystals oriented towards the interior of the cavity. The mineral can also appear in hydrothermal veins and in other geological contexts favorable to the formation of quartz.

Well-developed crystals usually exhibit prismatic shapes with natural terminations, a vitreous luster, and various degrees of transparency. A frequent feature is color zoning: the purple may be unevenly distributed in the crystal, with lighter and more intense regions, sometimes concentrated towards the crystal terminations.

Inside, one can observe veils, mineral inclusions, healed fractures, and various growth patterns. These elements formed along with the mineral and represent a part of its geological history.
