About Amethyst Amethystos

Amethyst is a variety of amethyst originating from South Africa, noted for its intense purple color and the clarity that the crystals can present.

This material comes from quartz deposits in northwestern South Africa, a region also known for its spectacular formations of Spirit Quartz. Amethyst specimens are distinguished by rich violet tones, natural contrasts, and, in many cases, by exceptional clarity, which allows light to penetrate the crystal structure.

Each formation is different, and the distribution of color, transparency, inclusions, and crystal peculiarities are the result of the natural formation process.

Where does the name "Amethystos" come from?

The name of the amethyst comes from the Greek améthystos, a term that can be translated as "not drunk" or "that does not get drunk."

In antiquity, there was a belief that amethyst could protect against the effects of excessive alcohol. The Greeks and, later, the Romans associated this stone with lucidity and temperance, wearing amethyst or using objects decorated with this stone.

This historical association between amethyst and the preservation of mental clarity contributed to the symbolism that the mineral maintains to this day.
