Black kyanite is a variety of kyanite with a distinctive appearance, characterized by elongated, lamellar crystals, which can group into radial formations similar to fans. The color ranges from anthracite gray to deep black, sometimes with subtle silvery reflections.
From a mineralogical point of view, kyanite is an aluminum silicate (Al₂SiO₅). A remarkable feature of this mineral is its hardness varying depending on the crystal direction, determined by its strongly anisotropic crystal structure.
Kyanite mainly forms in metamorphic rocks, under high-pressure conditions. Striations, overlapping lamellae, irregular edges, and separations between crystals are natural characteristics of its formation.
