Black kyanite is a variety of kyanite with a distinctive appearance, characterized by crystals elongated, lamellar, which can group into fan-like radial formations. The color varies from anthracite gray to intense black, sometimes with subtle silver reflections.
From a mineralogical point of view, kyanite is a aluminum silicate (Al₂SiO₅). A remarkable feature of this mineral is different hardness depending on the direction of the crystal, determined by its strongly anisotropic crystal structure.
Kyanite is mainly formed in metamorphic rocks, under high pressure conditions. Striations, overlapping lamellae, irregular edges and separations between crystals are natural features of its formation mode.
