Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony, part of the quartz family, prized for its warm and intense colors that range from orange and orange-red to brick-red and reddish-brown.

Mineralogically, carnelian is mainly composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). Unlike quartz which forms well-defined individual crystals, chalcedony has a microcrystalline structure, being made up of extremely fine quartz aggregates.

The characteristic color of carnelian is mainly associated with the presence of iron oxides and hydroxides dispersed in the mass of the mineral. The amount and distribution of these compounds determine natural color variations, from bright and translucent orange to deeper reds and browns.

Carnelian can present translucent and opaque areas, subtle bands, color clouds, small inclusions and intensity variationsWhen it is cut and polished, these features become more apparent, and light can penetrate differently through each area of the stone, enhancing the depth of the colors.

In nature, carnelian often forms in cavities and fissures of rocks, through the gradual deposition of silica-rich solutions. It can appear associated with other varieties of chalcedony and quartz, and some specimens retain bands, small cavities, or other structures resulting from the formation process.
