Dragon Blood Stone, known internationally as Dragon Blood Stone or Dragon Blood Jasper, is a natural material with a very distinctive appearance, characterized by the combination of deep green and red to reddish-brown areas..
Despite the commercial name "jasper," the material is not always a jasper in the strict mineralogical sense. Specimens from Tshipise, South Africaare also marketed under the name Bastite Dragon Blood Stone. Bastite does not designate an individual mineral, but a material resulting from the alteration and replacement of pre-existing minerals, especially minerals from the pyroxene group, a process that can generate aggregates rich in secondary minerals.
The green color is related to the minerals formed during these alteration processes, while the red and reddish-brown areas are mainly associated with the presence of iron oxides and hydroxides.. Their irregular distribution creates the characteristic pattern of the stone: spots, veins, and contrasting areas that differ considerably from one specimen to another.
The material is generally opaque, with a compact structure, and after polishing, it can acquire a very beautiful shine. The color contrast becomes much more evident on polished surfaces, where both the transitions between different shades of green and the concentrations of iron-rich minerals can be observed.
The name “Dragon Blood” is not a mineralogical one, but a commercial name, inspired by the appearance of the stone: green and red were symbolically associated with a dragon's skin and blood. It is precisely this color combination that made the material known in the international mineral trade under this name.
