Smoky quartz is a natural variety of quartz, valued for its characteristic shades, which range from translucent smoky gray and delicate brown to very dark brown, almost black. Specimens with extremely intense coloration are known as morion.
From a mineralogical point of view, smoky quartz is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) and crystallizes in the trigonal system. Its color is not caused by an actual pigment, but appears as a result of natural irradiation of the crystal in the geological environment, in association with structural defects and traces of aluminum present in the crystal lattice. This process can occur over very long geological periods and produces the smoke-like tones characteristic of the mineral.
Well-formed crystals may display prismatic faces, natural terminations, and growth striations, and inside one can observe veils, healed fractures, mineral inclusions, or areas with different color intensities. In transparent and translucent specimens, these internal structures become particularly visible when the crystal is viewed in light.
An interesting feature of smoky quartz is the very wide variation of color. Some crystals are almost transparent, with a subtle smoky tint, while others develop deep tones of brown and gray-black. There can even be natural color zonings within the same crystal, resulting from the different conditions in which it formed.
