Morganite is the pink to peach-pink variety of beryl, the same mineral family that includes emerald and aquamarine. Its delicate color is mainly determined by the presence of small amounts of manganese in the crystal's structure.
From a mineralogical point of view, morganite is a beryllium and aluminum silicate and crystallizes in the hexagonal system. Natural shades can range from very pale pink and peach-pink to more intense tones, and the stone can be transparent, translucent, or more opaque, depending on the quality and structure of the material.
The name morganite was given in 1911 in honor of J. P. Morgan, a well-known collector and supporter of mineralogy.
