Pyrite is a mineral easy to recognize due to its golden-bronze color and intense metallic luster. Its gold-like appearance has earned it the popular name "fool's gold," but from a mineralogical point of view, it is a completely different mineral.

Pyrite is composed of iron disulfide (FeS₂) and crystallizes in the cubic system. It can form very well-defined cubic crystals, pyritohedra, or aggregates of numerous crystals, sometimes with fine and regular striations on the crystal surfaces.

. In light, the crystal faces strongly reflect and highlight shades of golden, yellow-bronze, and metallic tones characteristic of the mineral.
