Sardonyx is a variety of chalcedony, part of the quartz family, characterized by the natural alternation of brown-reddish, orange, white, cream, or almost black bands. Its name comes from the combination of sard, the brown-reddish variety of chalcedony, and onyx, known for its layered structure.
From a mineralogical point of view, sardonyx is mainly composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) and has a microcrystalline structure. Its bands form through the successive deposition of layers of chalcedony with differences in color and composition, creating distinct natural patterns.
