This piece of selenite with cinnabar from Mexico is a mineralogical specimen formed through the natural overlay of two distinct geological processes, which led to the appearance of a rare and well-defined association. The selenite crystals initially formed in evaporitic environments, and were later partially impregnated by hydrothermal fluids, favoring the deposition of cinnabar directly on and within the crystal mass.
The result is a coherent mineralogical association, in which the white-translucent selenite matrix is crossed or dotted with red cinnabar inclusions, without artificial boundaries. The two minerals are intimately linked structurally and visually, with the cinnabar accentuating the form and transparency of the selenite, while the selenite highlights the intense color of the cinnabar.
